Defragmentation (2023)
Fragments of objects, fragments of subject. Pieces of fragmented humanity under the sharp optics of the teacher Guayasamín underlie the collective consciousness of universal art. And it is in this absolute context where something happens: a type of fractional partition throughout the history of modern art that would seem immovable is individualized in the interpretative work of Christian Mera. In Christian's contemporary mind, these fragments of aesthetics and reflection cohere; and thus they are compiled, rebuilt and linked overlapping in each canvas of this series. That's defragmentation; a concept of aesthetic incorporation and artistic reinterpretation based on formal appropriation and generative speculation. Fourteen fragmented works by Guayasamín, Mera defragments them in the space-time of each canvas in this collection and thus operates an aesthetic self-reflection that exceeds the master's form and overflows the color of Huacayñan, of Anger, of Tenderness. The defragmentation of Christian Mera occurs where the fragmentation of Oswaldo Guayasamín has emerged.
